U13s were on fire

Match Report by: Andrew Heys, KRUFC U13s Coach

KRUFC vs Aireborough
Final Score: 12 – 5

Although Keighley could only muster a squad of 14 on a bleak Sunday morning, they started each game with a belief they could win.

The first game was against a very pacy Aireborough side that had earlier beaten Colne and Nelson. Keighley devised a game plan of keeping the ball tight and using our forwards which payed dividends. Keighley gained the upper hand with a great set piece involving Sam, Ciaran and Max making up the front row, Keighley won the scrums which meant the explosive back line could pick holes in the Aireborough defence. Aireborough defended well until live wire, inside centre, Denon hit a gap and scored a try between the posts. The try was converted by Johnny. Keighley came straight back at Aireborough using the back line extremely well and allowing powerhouse, outside centre, Jack to score on the corner, the try was unconverted. Half time - Keighley 12 Aireborough 0.

The second half started with a slip in concentration by Keighley, enabling Aireborough to come out fighting putting Keighley under pressure at every opportunity resulting in Aireborough scoring a try which was unconverted. Keighley switched back on but could not break through Aireborough’s defence.

KRUFC vs Colne & Nelson
Final Score: 29 – 0

Keighley went straight into their second game looking lively and well organised with some great quick hand and clearing out. Nathan released full back Toby, who hit a gap but was unlucky and brought down short of the line. Colne came back into things using the big pack to gain yards at every opportunity they could but on a day where Keighley’s defence was on top form they couldn't find a way through.

The Game opened up with Keighley taking advantage with a great scrum in mid field. Nathan fed the ball to Gregor who shipped it to the new inside centre Kristian who, with pace and power, beat a few defenders to score a try between the posts. The try was converted by Gregor. Keighley maintained their dominance in the game with Jack bullying defenders at will, with some strong direct runs which paid off with a fine try, the try was unconverted. Half time Keighley 12 Colne 0.

The second half carried on as the first ended, Keighley’s strong direct running causing problem after problem for the Colne defence. Johnny punching holes, supported by Lucas which led to a quick ball to Max who was unfortunately held up. From a five meter scrum Keighley where awarded a penalty and sent Jack on a low crash ball to score out wide, conversion missed. From the resulting kick off received by Denon he went the full length to score another try for Keighley which was converted by Gregor. Colne kick off again and was once again caught by Denon who went the full length of the pitch to score and again converted by Gregor.
