Match Report
A strong Littleborough Under 10 team were out to put Keighley to the sword in the second game of the morning.
Still buoyed by their success in the first game, Keighley lined up against a bigger, apparently more mobile team from visiting Littleborough and for the first 2 minutes of the game it was obvious that they needed to be at the top of their game in order to keep the visitors at bay with Will Halliday and Aaron Wilson once again showing steely determination in the tackle.
Keighley moved the ball well with Lennon Curr and Zac Scott particularly quick to capitalise on any opportunity. A penalty conceded by Littleborough on their ¼ proved to be the catalyst for Keighley to take the upper hand with Keir Welch feeding Harry Gould who took the ball quickly allowing Wilson to slide through the Littleborough defence to score his first try of the day.
Keighley (1) 5 – Littleborough (0) 0 – 3 minutes played.
Littleborough came straight back into the game but were continually frustrated by excellent Keighley tackling.
Keighley continually stole the ball in play but despite their territorial advantage they were unable to turn possession into tries. When Joss McArthur took a knock he was replaced by Tom Richardson who immediately made his presence felt with yet another storming tackling on the ½.
Keighley pushed hard and turned the ball repeatedly with Curr almost increasing their lead only to be bundled over into touch 5 yards out.
Keighley made tackle after tackle completely stifling any Littleborough endeavours in the centre of the pitch with Wilson, Scott and Richardson combining repeatedly in the tackle.
On 8 minutes Keighley surged forward after turning over the ball and from the ensuing ruck Scott wrestled the ball clear and made for the line but was despatched into touch by a ferocious tackle on the line.
From the line-out, Littleborough showed their obvious strength in defence as they resisted the pressure brought to bear by the Keighley forwards but they were unable to clear their lines until the last play of the half when once more, Halliday thwarted a potential try scoring run by a Littleborough back.
Half Time Keighley (1) 5 – Littleborough (0) 0
With everything to play for, the second half started with a huge Keighley bonus as Gould was fed the ball from Keir Welch and he took route one straight through the centre to score Keighley’s second try
Keighley (2) 10 – Littleborough (0) 0 – 11 minutes played.
Keighley continued to show great commitment in the tackle against a bigger older team but despite the difference they were able to close down Littleborough time after time.
On 15 minutes Richardson stole the ball and dummied to Curr who set James Field free on the outside to sprint to the line in a carbon copy of his first try of the day.
Keighley (3) 15 – Littleborough (0) 0 – 15 minutes played.
On 16 minutes, Littleborough were rewarded for their endeavours when they stole the ball on the Keighley 5 yard line when Keighley failed to clear their lines and they got their first points on the scoreboard.
Keighley (3) 15 – Littleborough (1) 5 – 16 minutes played.
For the remaining 4 minutes of the match Keighley soaked up the Littleborough pressure with both backs and forwards tackling and driving hard against the bigger team. However, they weathered the storm and thoroughly deserved their win.
Final Score - Keighley (3 Tries) 15 Points – Littleborough (1 Try) 5 Points
Keighley Scorers: - Wilson 1, Gould 1, Field 1.
“We battled extremely hard today against a very mobile, bigger, older team” said Coach Nigel Curr “We competed for every single ball on every single inch of the pitch and we proved that we can defend as well as we can attack. We have one or two things to work on in training but all the Coaches are very happy with today’s’ performance from the whole team” he concluded.
