Joe McDowell (Keighley RUFC President) – A Life Well Lived

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joe McDowell, beloved President of Keighley RUFC, who passed away on Monday evening.

Joe was more than just a club president—he was the heart and soul of Keighley RUFC, a man whose influence spanned generations. His dedication, warmth, and sharp wit made him a true icon within the club and beyond. Whether on the touchline, in the clubhouse, or simply sharing a story, Joe had a way of making everyone feel welcome, valued, and part of something special.

Tributes have poured in from all who knew him, reflecting the deep impact he had on so many lives. He has been described as a “great man and friend to all with a wicked sense of humour” and someone whose storytelling left people with “really fond memories.” One club member, who joined nearly six decades ago, remembered Joe as an inspiration from the very start, saying: “Joe was an icon at the club when I joined 59 years ago and remains so. I’ve respected, admired, and appreciated his friendship all these years.” Another summed it up simply: “Genuinely one of the best.”

Joe’s love for Keighley RUFC was immeasurable, as one tribute beautifully put it: “Joe was a wonderful guy and a big part of my life. His love for the club and his work over the years helped make it the amazing place it is now.” His presence will be missed not only for his leadership but also for his legendary storytelling, as another shared: “Very sad, but what a great bloke—Keighley through and through and a story for every occasion.” Perhaps the simplest yet most fitting tribute of all: “What a legend.”

To honour Joe’s memory, there will be a minute’s silence before the match on Saturday as a mark of respect for a man who gave so much to Keighley RUFC.

Joe’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, the friendships he forged, and the club he helped shape into the family it is today. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.

Funeral details will be shared once confirmed.

Our thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him. Rest in peace, Joe.
