It is with great sadness that we report that Joe passed away in his sleep in Thompson Court, Crossflatts, where had been for a few weeks, after a short stay in hospital. He was 91 years old. He attended his wife Gwen's funeral on 20th October after she passed away on 29th August and was hoping to go back home with a care package in place.
Joe was a lifelong member of our club and a magnificent servant to it being on the committee for 60 years from 1960 to 2020 and Fixture Secretary for 46 years from 1966 to 2012, which is one of the longest periods in Yorkshire Rugby. For much of this time, there were no mobile phones and fixtures had to be arranged by sending letters or making telephone calls.
During his working career he spent many years at John Smith's Crane Works travelling the length and breadth of the country ensuring massive cranes were installed and erected correctly. This meant that Gwen had to be his personal secretary taking calls and arranging fixtures whilst Joe was away from home.
He was a keen golfer and went on annual pilgrimages with rugby club friends to parts of Europe for golf.
Details of his funeral arrangements will be posted when known.
