An entertaining game of league rugby.

Keighley in contrast to the previous week showed a lot of determination and commitment, which proved too much for Salem.

Within the first few minutes Keighley were guilty of holding on in a ruck, which resulted in an easy penalty for Salem’s kicker Jonny Robinson. Shaken by conceding an early advantage Leigh Sugden and the pack imposed themselves and kept the play in the opposition half. Salem surviving on scraps of possession were forced to kick to clear their lines. With the fundamentals, the scrum and lineout in full working order Keighley quickly returned play to Salem territory.

After dominating a series of rucks the ball was delivered to the backs, some sleight of hand by Alex Brown gave Danny Mcgee enough space to avoid a would be tackler and the opportunity to score, converted by Brown. There followed a period of Keighley domination, big scrum half Scott Dyson with strong runs from broken play continuously forced the Salem defence onto the back foot which gave time and space for the backs to work their magic, although they got to within a whisker of the line on three occasions last ditch tackles or poor final passes kept them out.

Salem stuck to their task, with ex-Keighley boy Ian Woodwiss marshalling his forwards from scrum half, and lively fly half Richard Langhorn varying his play Keighley were forced into defensive mode, unfortunately some hasty play at the breakdown was penalised, the points were taken by a very accurate long kick from Robinson.

Although Salem found the Keighley forwards especially the back row of Inman, Sugden and Lowther difficult to handle they had enough possession and composure to move the ball wide to a potentially dangerous back division. Although centre Kris Whata managed to make inroads at centre the Keighley defence held them at bay. However, once again over eagerness at a ruck gave Robinson a further three points. Keighley soon returned to what they do best, close driving support play. Taking the ball deep into the Salem half, breaks from Sugden and Dave Lister were followed up by Dyson who drew a final defender to give Tom Lowther a try under the posts, converted by Brown. Salem closed the gap with penalty from Robinson.

The second half was very much an arm wrestle, Salem managed to come to terms with the Keighley forwards and through intelligent counter rucking slowed down their supply of ball, even though Alex Brown and wingers Lucus Uren and Liam McGee came close to scoring the majority of the play was a series of minor attacks and counter attacks with defences well in control. Alex Brown who had an excellent all round game finished the scoring with a penalty.

Next week Keighley continue their travels with an away trip to Ilkley.
