The trip to the seaside did nothing for an inconsistent Keighley.

Within minutes of the start Scarborough’s New Zealand prop Matty Jones crashed through a flimsy defence, a neat one handed pass found centre Billy Parker in support who scored wide out. Keighley fought back and spent some fifteen minutes camped in Scarborough territory. Although winger Sam Walker came close to scoring Keighley were too intent on forcing the game and as a result a number of opportunities went begging.

Scarborough eventually took play back into the Keighley twenty two metre area, a steal against the head at a scrum gave them the opportunity to move the ball along the back line, with the full back making the extra man the Keighley defence was outnumbered and a try for winger Matt Lucus, converted by Matty Jones.

With the half time whistle approaching Keighley applied more pressure which resulted in a penalty for Alex Brown. A minute later a poor clearance kick from the Scarborough full back was charged down, the Keighley forwards secured the ball and quickly moved it wide giving centre Adam Horsfall an easy score.

In the second half Keighley were determined to retain possession and take the direct approach through their strong running forwards and the centre partnership of Marco Ferrazzano and Adam Horsfall. Eventually the pressure told, Scarborough were found guilty of continually attempting to slow the release of the ball at the break down, which led to a yellow card for their wing forward, and a simple penalty for Alex Brown. Once again through determined defence Scarborough weathered the storm, on the return of their carded player they forced Keighley to retreat and some excellent handling gave full back Graeme Jeffrey a fine try, converted by Jones.

Keighley made substitutions and began clawing their way back into the game. Unfortunately their replacement outside half Ben Blackwell was injured in a tackle and was forced to leave the field. With all their substitutes used Keighley had to play the last ten minutes of the game with fourteen men. Although they battled well, a solid take and drive at a line out gave Scarborough flanker Louis Karl the final score.

This Saturday Keighley are at home to near neighbours Ilkley, who will be intent on spoiling Keighley’s unbeaten home record. Kick off is at the later time of 3pm.
