A very disappointing start to the season for Keighley, losing to a young enthusiastic Rishworthians. In the first five minutes Keighley forwards drove over the opposition try line only to lose possession in the final movement. There followed twenty minutes of midfield rugby where defences dominated and both teams lacked cohesion, which resulted in patchy error strewn performance. Eventually Keighley forwards exerted themselves and gained territory. A kick out of defence by Rishworthians was taken by powerful Keighley centre Ryan Gibson who broke free, combining with wing forward Lucas Uren, to score a well worked try. With the stalemate broken good scrum possession gave outside half Fin Meegan the chance to threw a long pass to winger Sam Blakely who rounded the last defender to score in the corner. Keighley with a good supply of possession allowed centre Gibson the chance to control midfield. Unfortunately the pressure exerted was not turned into points through general sloppy play that gifted possession at vital moments. Although Rishworthians were feeling the strain their defence was excellent, and they moved the ball wide at every opportunity. Their efforts were rewarded when elusive right winger Dylan Hilton gained possession from a tap penalty allowing him to race in at the corner. The score gave Rishworthians a new lease of life, putting some good moves together they came close to another score, only resolute defence kept them out. Once again near the end of the half Keighley forwards combined well with the straight running backs to take play deep into opposition territory, resulting in a try under the posts for Max Wild, converted by Fin Meegan.
At the start of the second half, Rishworthians exerted some early pressure. Good hands gave winger Hilton space and time. Which resulted in him dancing around a few defenders to score, outside half Neil Afioga slotted the conversion. Keighley stung into action forced their way down the field, once again they managed to lose the ball over the line. With a few points the difference Keighley with plenty of possession tried to force the game, which resulted in Rishworthian outside half Afioga intercepting a telegraphed pass, racing away to score under the posts, he also added the conversion. Keighley rallied, a scrum deep in the opposition territory gained quick ball on the front foot allowing centre Gibson to drive over, Meegan added the conversion. In the last quarter of the match Keighley were once again guilty of poor execution, a loose pass in midfield was picked off by Rishworthian full back Ellis Armstrong who raced away to score, Afioga added the extras. At this stage of the game Rishworthians began to dominate territory forcing Keighley to play from deep. Eventually with time running out Keighley gained a long range penalty which Meegan converted. Unfortunately for Keighley a player drifted off side giving Rishworthian outside half Neil Ofioga the penalty that sealed the result. Credit to Rishworthians for their hard fought victory. Keighley in many respects threw the game away, their lack of accuracy on the try line and giving away two interception tries was always going to be difficult to overcome.
