A really good entertaining game of league rugby. Goole with a big pack and strong backs were quick out of the blocks, their brand of hard driving play took Keighley by surprise. Keighley tactics in defence were excellent, not over committing to the ruck and a quick moving defensive wall kept the opposition at bay, hooker Sean Miniken and the back row certainly put in a defensive shift. Unfortunately Keighley outside half Alex Brown was yellow carded for a high tackle. What should should have been a handicap was turned into a positive, Keighley showing enterprise and skill took play deep into Goole territory resulting in a well taken try for Fin Meegan. A little later a break from midfield gave Goole scrum half Charlie Kirk the chance to link with his forwards and a try for prop Adam Wildman. Goole who were dominating the early forward exchanges especially the scrum caused Keighley problems, but thanks to the stone wall defence they were unable to turn the pressure into points. Just before half time Keighley winger Alan Ebbrell broke free and was only stopped just short of the line, which resulted in a penalty for Alex Brown.
The second half started well for Keighley they mounted a series of attacks that once again led to another penalty for Alex Brown. At this stage of the game Keighley had sorted out their scrum issues and were able to mount a series of attacks. Unfortunately in breakdown play Goole too often gained the upper hand, even if they were unable to gain possession they slowed down Keighley ball. Their No 6 James Malcolmson was outstanding, he together with his powerful pack caused serious problems at the ruck. A promising Keighley attack in the Goole half went adrift when they lost possession, giving the chance of a breakout up field that led to a try for supporting Malcolmson, converted by outside half Rhys Moore. With one point the difference and the teams evenly matched Keighley were intent on moving the ball about. Once again another promising attacking move was picked off, and the ball stolen , which resulted in a breakout and a try for speedy winger Aaron Jerry-Murray, converted by Rhys Moore. Keighley worked hard to regain the lead, their constant pressure led to another penalty for Alex Brown. Keighley were managing to absorb Goole power play until a poor kick out of defence gave Goole winger the ball and space, breaking across field he found Charlie Kirk in support and another try. Time was running out, Keighley were forced to chase the game. A back move in midfield gave a Goole player the chance to hack the ball on, forcing the last Keighley defender to kick the ball dead. From the resulting scrum, quick ball along the backs and a final try for winger Billy Walker. Goole played their game really well and deserved their result, unfortunately for Keighley, although they played well were prone to a number of mistakes that gave Goole relatively easy opportunities. Next week another difficult game, at home to high plying Old Otlensians.
