Keighley admits defeat..

Yorkshire One: Bridlington 66 Keighley 17

KEIGHLEY'S run of six wins on the trot was brought to an abrupt halt by runaway leaders Bridlington.

This was a first versus second clash but the visitors were without some first-team regulars against a side who have now won all 12 games to top Yorkshire One by 17 points.

In the opening minutes, a handling error saw Brid gain ground well into Keighley's 22. The Rose Cottage side managed to hold off their opponents and a penalty was given which saw Alex Brown get the first points on the board for the visitors.

Keighley and Bridlington seemed well matched in the scrum early on but the strong home forward pack were soon able to win scrum after scrum from that point on.

A few errors by Keighley's defence then saw Bridlington's fast winger Gary Stevens score the first try of the game in the far corner, which was duly converted.

Both teams battled it out in the middle ground but a kick through by Brid saw them once again in Keighley's 22. More errors from away defence gave Stevens the opportunity to score two more tries.

Keighley had the last word of the half though when Brown intercepted a lofty pass and ran in from the 50-metre line to score a try before the break.

In the second half, the visitors were severely punished by Brid for handling and defensive errors, giving Brid's Callum Sanderson opportunity to crash through for a try. This was closely followed by star man Stevens going over on two more occasions to take his tally to five.

Keighley put Brid under some pressure, quick ball seeing winger Jack Atkinson score the Rose Cottage outfit's second try. It was brief respite though as Bridlington's well-organised pack created another three tries before the final whistle as Keighley slumped to their third - and heaviest - defeat of the season.

They will hope to get back on track at Acklam in their next game a week on Saturday.
