Joe Copperwaite scores 13 points as Keighley pip Hullensians 23-21 in a keenly fought Yorkshire 1 encounter at Utley.

Keighley 23 Hullensians 21

Keighley returned to winning ways after a hard fought victory over a tough Hullensians team, making their first ever visit to Utley.. The visitors were first out of the blocks, dominating possession for the first ten minutes of the game. Speedy interplay between forwards and backs caused the Keighley defence serious problems, however some excellent first up tackling allowed them to weather the storm. Eventually Keighley got themselves back into the game; an attack down the middle was halted by a trip which led to a yellow card. The hosts took advantage when winger Joe Copperwaite scored wide out. With Alex Brown out with an injured leg, the Utleymen looked to a new kicker - Joe Copperwaite but his conversion attempt drifted wide. As so often happens, the scoring team relaxed which gave speedy Hullensian wing forward Ollie Dynan the chance to mount an attack, and he raced 40metres to score in the corner; outside half Lewis Baldwin added the very difficult conversion. Keighley with the forwards working hard put pressure on the contact area which gave the backs the chance to put some plays together. Centres Blackwell and Horsfall began to make ground down the middle of the field, quick recycled ball and a clever kick from outside half Rob Wilkinson, was chased down by winger Luke Carter, he took advantage of a defensive fumble to put full back Alfie Seeley over for a well taken try under the posts which Cppoerwaite converted. Hullensians changed tack and began to exert pressure up front, it paid dividends, from a line out they drove forward for hooker Andy Vernon to score, converted by Baldwin.

The second half continued in the same vein, both teams working hard to achieve dominance. A yellow card for a Keighley player gave Hullensians the opportunity to make ground. A scrum near the Keighley line was driven forward for flanker Dynan to gain his second try, once again converted by Baldwin. Keighley with forwards Tom Lowther, Dan Snowden and Leigh Sugden making the hard yards began to dominate territory, the pressure was turned into points when Joe Copperwaite landed a penalty. With time running out Keighley once again took play deep into the opposition territory, moving the ball wide gave winger Luke Carter the chance to score in the corner. This looked as if it was going to be the final play of the match, and a losing bonus point, however from the kick off Keighley managed through sheer grit and determination to maintain possession and took play into the Hullensian half. An indiscretion at a ruck by a defender led to a penalty. Keighley’s kicker Joe Copperwaite coolly landed the three points to gain the lead. Hullensians with only a few minutes to play did what they could, but it was too late.
