An understrength Keighley scored 5 tries in defeating Acklam at Utley, 36-0

Keighley 36 Acklam 0

The game started well, with both teams committed to open rugby. Although Keighley looked the more composed team Acklam began to dominate at the scrum and lineout, which gave them a lot of possession. They moved the ball through the backs searching for space on the wide outside. With Keighley’s defensive axis of Alex Brown and centres Horsfall and Blackwell in fine form there was none to be had. Keighley fought their way back into the game and pressured their opponents but a number of good plays were spoiled through poor execution. Their only reward for an extended period of territorial advantage was a penalty for Alex Brown. Acklam once again with more than their fair share of possession tried the aerial route kicking deep, however, with strong full back Alan Ebbrell back to full fitness this was often the wrong option and led to a number of counter attacks. Eventually, in the last ten minutes of the half Keighley put their game together, a darting break from scrum half Jonathan Clark and quick hands gave winger Luke Carter a run in to the corner. A few minutes later a break through the middle from replacement hooker Declan Hampson found Ebbrell in support and a well timed pass gave Carter a forty metre run in under the posts, Alex Brown added the conversion.

Acklam started the second half strongly with their centre Marcus Sudron making good ground every time he had the ball. Once again the home defence was rock solid. Keighley having absorbed the initial pressure returned the play deep into the opposition half, a well rehearsed lineout move gave lively wing forward Tom Lowther the chance to crash through the defence to score, Brown added the extras. Once again the visitors raised their game, with an excellent scrum and good lineout they had enough possession to test out the opposition, although they made good ground through the forwards there was no way through the back line. Keighley managed a scrum on the half way line and although it was in retreat number eight Josh Hannah broke away at pace, support from half backs Brown and Clark gave second row Sean Minikin a well taken try near the posts, Brown added the conversion. Acklam to their great credit worked really hard to get themselves back into the game but a late flourish from the Keighley backs gave winger Jack Atkinson the chance to score the last try of the match. Alex Brown finished the scoring with his fourth conversion.

Keighley now lie second in the table behind Beverley but face a daunting task next wek when they travel to neighbours Bradford Salem; 3pm KO.
