KEIGHLEY lost to their derby rivals as deficient line-out and breakdown play proved their undoing.

Yorkshire One: Old Brodleians 22 Keighley 13

KEIGHLEY lost to their derby rivals as deficient line-out and breakdown play proved their undoing.

Old Brods capitalised on the extra possession gained in a good game between two well-matched teams.

Keighley started well playing down the hill, with the back row, led by Rob Baldwin, forcing play downfield.

They were camped in Brods territory but their gains were negated by poor line-out play and an apparent lack of confidence, which resulted in plenty of offloading, lateral play and a distinct lack of drive towards the line.

Keighley had a number of opportunities to score but had to be content with a penalty from Alex Brown.

Brods eventually forced play back to midfield and were gifted possession when the visitors yet again lost the ball at the breakdown.

Speedy wing forward Brodie Wilson gathered up and sprinted through what seemed like the whole pack to score.

With their noses in front and the Keighley pack retreating into their shells, Wilson once again broke through a lacklustre defence to score under the posts, centre Phil Town converting.

Captain Brown responded with a well executed half-break wide out, giving young winger Joey Sugden the chance to score in the corner.

Brodleians, playing down hill in the second half, used the slope to their advantage. Plenty of possession from lineouts and good positional kicking from outside half Dan Cole kept Keighley pinned in their 22.

A rushed clearance kick form a poor lineout was charged down, gifting Brods prop Bennie Pritchett a try in the corner.

Although Keighley battled hard, any mistakes were punished, and meant a return to their 22.

Gaining a line-out five metres out, Brods gained possession and drove the ball over the line. The touchdown was claimed by number eight Cameron Wroot.

Keighley stirred themselves, with the back row leading the charge as Lucas Uren broke free and superb interplay between forwards and backs followed. With the forwards on the front foot, the backs showed what they could do as a nicely worked passage of back play gave full back Alfie Seeley his chance and he scored a try in the corner. Unfortunately for Keighley, it was too little too late.
