Dinnington gained confidence from the early scores and were intent on keeping Keighley pinned into their own half. Although they varied their attacking options they were unable to breach a solid Keighley defence, with Scott Dyson in outstanding form. Keighley managed to break out of defence on a number of occasions but the rugged Dinnington forwards were able to slow the ball down at the breakdown which gave their defence a distinct advantage.
Whatever was said at the Keighley half time team talk certainly worked, the forwards raised their game and some fine runs from the Sugden brothers ably supported by the the rest of the pack put Dinnington under an enormous amount of pressure, causing them eventually to handle in a ruck and a penalty that Alex Brown easily converted. The Keighley backs with quicker ball were a different outfit mounting waves of attacks through the centre or down both wings. Dinnington to their credit defended manfully.
With twenty minutes of the game remaining Dinnington against the run of play managed to drive their way into the Keighley twenty two metre area. At a Keighley scrum they forced Keighley backwards, after a series of pick and drives outstanding number eight Will Marshall drove over for a try.
In many respects that was the last meaningful Dinnington attack, Keighley stung into action camped themselves in the opposition half, with the forwards taking turns to drive the ball at the defence a score had to come, after a great deal of effort the pack crossed the line and hooker Will Armitage touched down.
From the restart play returned to the Dinnington try line, a quick ball along the line gave quick thinking Alex Brown the chance to duck under the defence to score wide out. At this stage of the game the floodgates could have opened. However Dinnington with a losing bonus point in their sites managed to keep Keighley at bay until the final whistle.
