A losing bonus point was scant reward for a superb effort where every player put 100% in...

From the kick off Keighley were under extreme pressure, the ball was dropped and from the ensuing scrum and ruck the Phoenix pack drove over in the corner, flanker Ryan Peacey claiming the try. Outside half Dan Storey landed the difficult conversion. Within minutes they increased their lead, a speculative kick and chase into the corner led to a try for full back Craig Deacon.

With twelve points on the board in as many minutes it looked decidedly ominous for Keighley; however they managed to fight their way back into the game. The back row of Inman, Sugden and Minikin led the way, gaining territory and quick ball gave the backs the opportunity they needed, some slight of hand from outside half Alex Brown gave winger Sam Walker one man to beat and a try under the posts, converted by Ben Blackwell.

Growing in confidence, Keighley battered away at the opposition line, eventually wing forward Shaun Minikin was driven over in the corner to level the scores.

The second half was an entertaining contest; Keighley with the positive influence of experienced centre Tom Rock and the hard working forwards going well managed to maintain the upper hand, and deservedly took the lead ten minutes in with a penalty kick from Ben Blackwell.

Keighley continued to dominate but found it difficult to break the firm Phoenix defence. With time running out Phoenix broke out of defence and kicked into the corner, unfortunately for Keighley the ball was knocked on and into the hands of full back Deacon who flicked it to centre Ben Miller who scored.

Although Keighley tried desperately to regain the lead their last chance a dropped goal from Alex Brown sailed wide, much to the relief of the jaded Phoenix pack, all further efforts were beaten by the clock.

The losing bonus point was scant reward for a superb effort, giving Doncaster Phoenix who are currently second in the league a twelve points start was too much for a brave Keighley team. Interestingly the visitors coach commented “the best team lost”.

Hopefully this performance will help kick start the rest of the season, having taken the second placed team so close this Saturday they travel to third placed Wath upon Dearne.
