Keighley with a much depleted team played extremely well to gain a deserved victory.

Wath started brightly using their big forwards to compress the Keighley defence, but because of the sheer doggedness of the Keighley forwards they were unable to gain quick ball, which allowed the defence to stay in shape. Although Wath dominated territory for long periods they were unable to crack a resolute defence marshalled by Danny McGee and veteran centre Neil Jordan.

As the half progressed Keighley gained confidence and through some fine forward play based on their competitive back row of Sugden, Hannah and Pullen they began to pressure the opposition line. With the lineout duo of Hannah and Illiff doing their job the rest of the pack were able to launch a drive over the try line and a grounding for wing forward Dave Pullen.

In the second half both teams were very tentative which resulted in something of a stalemate, and poor execution. Eventually Wath managed to put their game together and good work at a line out and a strong drive allowed captain Simon Lines to cross wide out. Keighley’s problems were compounded when a neat half break by outside half J. Bartlett led to a score under the posts for centre A. Hopkin, winger T. Quinn added the conversion. Once again Keighley dug deep and withstood a series of powerful attacks.

The Keighley forwards grafting away managed to gain good quick possession in midfield, the ball was skilfully moved wide and into the hands of attacking full back Sam Blakely. Running flat out he took the tackle of the last defender and slipped the ball inside to support player Danny McGee who raced in under the posts, scrum half Olly Mitchell landed the simple conversion.

With less than ten minutes to go and with both teams matching each other in all phases of play, Wath counter attacked with a kick and chase. Winger Sam Walker fielded the kick, slipped the first tackler with clever footwork and then with pace and sheer determination ran through the remainder of the Wath team to score in the corner. With time running out Wath once again camped in Keighley territory, however the Keighley defence held firm to gain the valuable league points.

This Saturday a difficult trip to the seaside, away to Scarborough
