Old Grovians Match Preview
On Saturday, we travel to Old Grovians, who this season are playing their home games at Cross Green - Otley RUFC.
Keighley RUFC has a lot of links with Old Grovians, which started back in the late 80’s when annually our 2nds had a Sunday fixture against the Woodhouse Grove old boys with players such as Rick Emmott, Russ Gibson and James Fidler to name but a few in their ranks, although they did play for Keighley on a Saturday. Those fixtures resulted in a number of Woodhouse old boys and teachers playing for Keighley for many years.
The links continue in more recent times when the OG’s were formed back in 2006 by several people, including ex-Keighley player John Hinchliffe who to this day is still involved, along with old boy Matt Gaffney.
In 2008/9 they were promoted to Yorkshire 4; in 2012/13 they went up to Y3 as Champions, and 2 years later went up to Y2 as Champions, where they play their rugby today.
As for previous league encounters, there are only two; back in 2015/16 in Y2, we came out winners of both games 33-0 and 5-54, Keighley went on to be promoted behind West Leeds and OG’s finished 10th.
OG’s currently sit 10th in the league, Keighley will go into Saturday’s game as the favourite's, but Keighley can’t ignore the pace that OG’S have at their disposal, fullback Max Kennedy having already scored a bucket full of trys for them this season.
Defence – a key to our success, currently there are only 2 teams with a better record, having played 8 games, Ilkley & Guisborough within the Northern Division.
Player concerns - Sean Kelly - knee, Eddie Keighley - shoulder & Alfie Seeley – wrist.
Finally, please don’t go to Apperley Bridge to watch the game – there will only be dog walkers!
