The game started well for the home team, continual forward pressure and a fine drive by prop Craig Spencer opened a gap in the York defence allowing Leigh Sugden the chance to cross wide out. A little later Olly Mitchell added to the score line with a penalty. After a poor start York put their game together, using the driving maul as their main weapon the forwards gained good field positions and pressured the try line, their reward was a penalty for scrum half Hargreaves.
Keighley unable to get enough good possession were forced to defend their line against a series of attacks, eventually the pressure succeeded, the big York forwards forced their way over the line and a try for number eight Andy Kay, converted by Hargreaves.
Keighley responded, well constructed back play gave winger Sam Walker the ball and some space, skipping past would be tacklers he raced forty metres to the line, took on the last defender before passing inside to his fellow winger Sam Blakeley.
The second half was a very much an end of season affair, both teams threw the ball about, but there was a definite lack of urgency. Keighley competitive throughout gained good field positions which brought them a series of relatively easy penalties. Unfortunately for them two hit the upright and one sailed wide.
Both teams with their thoughts probably on next seasons campaign chose to experiment with the subs bench and different combinations of players. Keighley's line out was weakened which gave York more possession, with nothing to lose they moved the ball wide and some fine back play gave centre G. Davies the chance to score, converted by Hargreaves.
Near the end with both teams fading replacement back Campbell Thomson scored the last try of the game which was converted by Hargreaves.
With the end of the league season Keighley will be involved in a number of sevens tournaments, and the annual Nathan Cubbit Trust Tag Event on the 26th May.
On the social front they can ponder life in next seasons Yorkshire two league at their second beer festival on the 16th and 17th of May, reward for a long and bruising season.
