A lively start for Sheffield medics, until the Keighley forwards took control and drove second row Leigh Sugden over for the first try. The try against the run of play, gave Keighley confidence, with half backs of Rob Wilkinson and Danny McGee in fine form behind a dominant pack the writing was on the wall for the medics. Although they had their share of possession and territory the medics were unable to break down a resolute defence.
Eventually Keighley pressure and some class handling gave winger Luke Carter the chance to cross in the corner. Towards the end of the half the Keighley forwards efforts were rewarded when second row David Illiff finished off some close support play with a try that was converted by Danny McGee.
In the second half the Medics decided to play ‘fast and loose’ to avoid the dominant Keighley forwards, a ploy that worked well. They came close to scoring on a number of occasions, but once again a well organised defence more often than not featuring centres Horsfall and Ebbrell kept them out. When they did opt to use the boot Keighley full back Ben Atkinson had the confidence and skill to run the ball back at them, good back line defence from the Medics managed to thwart a series of attacks.
Keighley moving up a gear decided to play a more direct game, with every forward playing their part the pressure took play into the opposition territory, from a dominant scrum number eight Josh Hannah drove over, McGee added the conversion. Unable to make headway against a keen Keighley defence, the Medics were finished off with a well organised lineout drive leading to a fine bonus point try for flanker Shaun Minikin.
