Keighley maintained their recent winning sequence despite a gap in fixtures due to the weather. From the first whistle it was clear that every squad member was focused on victory as all passed the ball freely through hands whilst not shirking the physical contact. Ilkley showed themselves to be a well drilled and solid team with quality across the pitch and the opening stanza was nip and tuck with neither side securing a lead. Keighley went close at the corner through Ryan Gibson, but he was bundled into touch with the line in sight. Ellie Kildunne not only prevented Ilkey scoring in open play, but drove her opponent back creating valuable space and time for her team.
It was this persistence that led to the opening try as she and Samuel Grant harried Ilkley in possession, driving them back over their own line until a mistake was made. Grant pounced immediately and touched the ball down.
The scores swung one way then the other over the course of the match with Keighley eventually taking a four tries to two lead. Ryan Gibson scored two whilst Ellie Kildunne scored the other. Fine performances from both William Hancock and Jax Watson showed their potential as well as the strides they have already taken in their rugby development.
A late try from Ilkey brought the scores closer and led to a nervous final moments, but Keighley showed their spirit and team ethic to clinch victory.
