Every One’s A Winner  !

In order to celebrate the recent completion of the installation of the Club’s new floodlights, Keighley U13’s hosted local rivals Bradford & Bingley Bees and cross-border challengers Burnley RUFC to a “Children In Need Night” tri-way fixture.

Bees v Burnley

A more matched affair dominated by neither side saw both squads playing open and competitive rugby with Bees just edging the first half to lead 15 – 10

Burnley again tried the highball route and once again were undone by great return offensive play. The Bees No.8 took the long clearance on the full and then powered through a static Burnley defence to score out wide. Despite the Blue and Yellow squads’ best endeavours they were again outgunned just before the final whistle with a carbon copy move for the Bees No.8 to score again under the posts. Conversion made.
FINAL SCORE – Bees 27 – Burnley 10

Keighley v Bees

Having been snuffed out last week in the Yorkshire County Cup tie between these 2 fierce rivals, Bees were out for revenge but Keighley had other ideas.

From the kick off Keighley built solidly down the left flank and James Field went to ground after a strong run into the corner presenting Leon Hobson-Sheriff with a drive over ball to open Keighley’s account. Curr made the conversion from wide out.
Keighley 7 – Bees 0

The restart saw Keighley given a taste of their own medicine when Bees long kick was chased down by the quickly advancing Bees attackers putting pressure for the first time on the Keighley defence. When the ball broke from the ensuing maul Bees No. 8 once more showed his mettle clearing out Lawrie before bundling the ball over the line for a Bees score. Conversion missed.
Keighley 7 – Bees 5

The resultant Keighley huddle once more proved to be the catalyst for their considered response to conceding the try.

Curr stuck the restart kick deep into the Bees 22 and from that point Keighley progressively prevented Bees from getting close to the gain line and when Tenniswood was taken into touch 10m out the resulting lineout won by McHugh, back to Rodbourne and with four quick passes field-wide Curr had crossed the line to score again. Conversion again hitting the upright.
Keighley 12 – Bees 5 – HALF TIME

Bees started the second period like demons possessed but the Keighley defence simply soaked up the pressure and turned up the wick almost at will.

5 minutes in, a long clearance kick was taken by Hobson-Sheriff in centre field and he powered to halfway before flipping the ball to Tenniswood now at outside centre who drew three successive tackles down the line before being caught 8m out but managed to clear out to Hobson-Sheriff who had backed up the charge to score under the posts. Darbyshire adding another 2 points.
Keighley 19 – Bees 5

Keighley continued to pile on the pressure and were making full use of the flanks. Deep into the Bees ¼ another dynamic drive over by Hobson-Sheriff for a pick and pop presented speedy Wilson now on the wing the chance to score in the corner. Conversion missed.
Keighley 24 – Bees 5

The closing stages were once more a fairly one sided affair, not due to lack of effort or endeavour by Bees, more pressure and invention from Keighley but when Bees conceded a penalty 10m out Rodbourne finished of the cannonball by powering over to the left of the posts. Conversion missed by Curr.
Keighley 29 – Bees 5 – FULL TIME

Three extremely entertaining, well-fought games which saw most of the players present playing their first competitive fixture under floodlights.

Thanks to Paul Spencer for stepping in very late to help out and referee all three matches – it makes such a difference having a Society Ref taking charge – better for all Teams and takes the pressure off the Coaches.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Club Bar Staff, Coaches and parents from the U13’s had arranged for a few games and warmth inducing food to be served after the games and almost all players, Keighley Coaches and a large number of parents joined in the atmosphere for Children in Need Night by donning Onesies, Pj’s or other bedware to raise money for the charity.

Not content with dominating the matches they played during the evening, (it must have been the nail varnish boys)  the Keighley youngsters again put the opposition to the sword by winning the Boat Race (bar staff disqualified for only having ½ measures) and Jack “Goose” McHugh winning the Cream Cracker Challenge.

Thanks to all those from all three clubs Keighley, Bradford & Bingley Bees and Burnley RUFC who turned up, played their part, no matter how little and contributed to Pudsey’s Charity and raised almost £215 on the night.

Coaches Comments

We should all be proud of the way ALL of the boys played. They are improving week by week and are taking into games the elements we work on in training. Both on and off the pitch the Coaches are increasingly impressed by the way these young men acquit themselves.
