A depleted 14 man Keighley succumb to Cleckheaton

A depleted Keighley side fielded 14 players against a full strength Cleckheaton side, and despite this it was 18 minutes before they conceded a try.

Keighley fought back with some strong running from Ryan Vero, with Henry Pratt supporting and both tackling well whenever Cleckheaton attacked. Keighley’s resistance resulted in a penalty which the ever alert Jonny Tanner took quickly with his team mates supporting quick ball was secured at the ruck and with the ball moved wide Billy Todd crossed for the try.

Half time saw the teams even at 5 – 5. Cleckheaton absorbed Keighley’s pressure early in the second half, but countered to score after 10 minutes. Keighley fought back and crossed the try line twice, but resolute Cleckheaton defence prevented Keighley from grounding the ball for the try. Keighley were beginning to tire due to playing with one less player, and Cleckheaton capitalised with a further try.

Keighley countered again, but lacked impetus at the breakdown and failed to move the ball wide when in possession and were subjected to further pain when Cleckheaton scored in the dying seconds.

Despite some good individual performances on the day, the whole team need to work as a cohesive unit.

Henry Pratt was a popular “Man of the Match” in recognition of his determined defence and strong running, particularly in support of Ryan Vero.
