Keighley 10 - Old Brods 35

Keighley u15s vs Old Brods

Keighley approached this match as an opportunity to show how well they can perform and as test in preparation for the Yorkshire Cup match against Ripon the following week.

The conditions were ideal with use of the 1st team pitch and perfect weather conditions for a great match.

The first 20 minutes of the match saw Keighley in dominance with Old Brods being pinned down in their half of the pitch. The majority of the play being between their 22 and the 10 meter line. Keighley forwards were very strong in the scrum and it was great to see a large volume of recycled ball being won by Keighley at the ruck.

The finishing was missing for Keighley, not helped by the strong defence that Old Brods were able sustain during the relentless attack. As a penalty was awarded the safe option was taken to gain some points, with Fin gathering 3 points from a penalty kick.

At the restart, Old Brods let loose with a strong attack and broke through for two quick converted tries just after the 20 minutes had passed.

Keighley focussed on their defence again and Old Brods were held back for the remainder of the first half, although the main playing area had moved further towards the half way rather than deep in the Old Brods half.

The second half was started with another break through try for Old Brods, stretching their lead to Keighley 3 – Old Brods 21.

Keighley remained determined to get more points on the board with strong attacking phases, just missing out due to dropped passes or missing supporting players in breaking runs. Their efforts were rewarded on the 40th minute with a try delivered by Taine and converted by Fin.

The remaining 20 minutes saw several passages of play where Keighley showed how strong they are able to play but dropped passes or missed tackles allowed Old Brods to continue to build their score whilst Keighley built up pressure but just missed converting their efforts to points.

The majority of the game saw Keighley playing in the Old Brods half; Old Brods points all coming from breaking runs where the speed of their backs out ran the Keighley defence. Keighley should look positively on their dominance of the field position.

The final score of Keighley 10 – Old Brods 35, was a fair reflection of the game.

Development areas for Keighley should focus on the passing and tackling elements, the two areas which could have significantly changed the result in the game today.
