York 41 - Keighley 17

York v Keighley

Keighley travelled the long trip for an early kick off at York. This became a bit frustrating as it was apparent that the York Team Managers were unaware of the early kick off requested by their Fixtures Secretary.

On a positive note, it enabled Keighley to have a longer warming up session to prepare for the match that we all anticipated would be a strong test of the team’s ability. Against York, Keighley were heading up against one of the strongest teams in the area for the 2015 season. A quick glance at the York results for this year indicating their 2015 performance.

And the match proved that Keighley were up to the challenge.

The first half saw an early try to York, but Keighley were not broken. The team focussed on their strengths and a strong battle commenced, each side breaking through on several occasions to then be stopped by strong covering tackles.

By half time York were two converted tries in front, but Keighley had hit the scoreboard with a try just before the whistle. This was the incentive the squad required as they now knew they were capable of creating a challenging second half.

The second half saw York start with another early try; however, this was soon countered with two tries from Keighley. The scores left Keighley just 7 points adrift and York were starting to become concerned with the drive from the Keighley forwards and the speed and lines the Keighley backs were using.
From this point, until the end of the match, it was a very close match with York just managing to break the Keighley defense and score three tries that ran against the flow of the game.

It was great to see Keighley win each of their scrums and occasionally win against the head on York’s put in. A great illustration of the progress in the pack this year.

This was one of the matches where it is difficult to highlight individuals as everyone had to play to the top of their game in order to enable the team to perform to their highest standard.

Keighley tries were hard fought and showed true grit and determination for the tries to hit the score sheet.

The stamina of the squad was put to full test, as we had brought no subs and the team were required to play at full pace for the full match. A great show for the squad members who tend to be brought on from the bench, showing they have the strength and commitment to play a full hour.

Development areas to focus on after the match are the counter rucking, where York gained several advantages over the Keighley pack, and support running for the players who make a break through an opponent’s defensive line.

A great team performance in this match with growing confidence, strength and stamina that will put Keighley in a positive place for the remaining matches of the season.

Match Honours:

Coaches Award – Jordan Yaxley and Joel Crummack.
From the start of the match to the end, both Jordan and Joel drove the efforts from the forwards. Unrelenting in their constant focus to win the ball at the breakdown and driving forwards to gain ground. Also a strong performance in the tackling in the close play around the forwards, preventing York from gaining ground and frustrating their scrum half by blocking the route out to the York backs.

Top Tackler – Taine Lightfoot
In the position of full back Taine was covering the pitch well and completed a number of try saving tackles. A strong and determined presence on the pitch and not afraid to place the tackles on the larger players in the York team as they attempted to break for a try.

Man of the Match – Ryan Gibson
Voted by the York team for his constant efforts to find a break in the York defense as Keighley attacked. Also noted for his strong kicking game, finding space behind the York attacking line which created a lot of advantages for Keighley whilst in defensive mode.
